How to Measure for Custom Size Shaker Doors and Made-to-Measure Cabinet Doors
Replacing your kitchen doors is one of the most cost-effective ways to transform the appearance of your kitchen without the expense and disruption of a full renovation. Whether you're ordering custom size shaker doors, replacement cabinet doors, or a complete set of made-to-measure kitchen doors, accurate measurements are essential to ensure a perfect fit.
In this guide, we'll explain exactly how to measure your existing kitchen doors and drawer fronts so you can confidently order bespoke shaker doors manufactured to your exact dimensions.

Why Choose Made-to-Measure Shaker Doors?
Many kitchens use non-standard cabinet sizes, particularly older kitchens or bespoke installations. Made-to-measure shaker doors allow you to:
- Replace existing doors without changing cabinets
- Refresh outdated kitchens at a fraction of the cost of a new kitchen
- Achieve a premium, bespoke appearance
- Match existing cabinetry dimensions exactly
- Avoid expensive alterations to existing units
At RS Bespoke, all shaker doors are manufactured to order, ensuring every door fits perfectly.
The Tools You'll Need
Before you begin, gather the following:
- Tape measure
- Pencil and notepad
- Smartphone or camera
- Masking tape (optional)
- Spirit level (optional)
For best results, measure in millimetres (mm).

Method 1: Measuring Existing Kitchen Doors (Recommended)
The simplest and most accurate method is to measure your existing doors.
Remove one door from the cabinet and measure:
Door Width
Measure from the left-hand edge to the right-hand edge of the door.
Example:
Width = 597mm
Door Height
Measure from the top edge to the bottom edge.
Example:
Height = 715mm
Your door size would therefore be:
597mm x 715mm
When ordering replacement shaker doors, simply enter these exact dimensions.
Measuring Drawer Fronts
Drawer fronts are measured in exactly the same way.
Measure:
- Overall width
- Overall height
Example:
597mm x 140mm
If replacing multiple drawer fronts, measure every drawer individually, as sizes often vary.
Measuring Cabinet Openings
If your doors are missing or damaged, you can measure the cabinet opening instead.
Measure:
- Opening width
- Opening height
Then add the appropriate overlay.
Most kitchens use a door overlay of approximately 17-20mm per side, but this can vary significantly depending on cabinet design.
If you're unsure, contact us with photographs of your cabinets and we'll help determine the correct door size.
Measuring Hinges and Hinge Holes
If you'd like your new shaker doors supplied with hinge holes pre-drilled, you'll need to provide:
Number of Hinges
Most doors use:
- 2 hinges for smaller doors
- 3 hinges for medium doors
- 4 hinges for tall doors
Hinge Hole Positions
Measure from the top edge of the door to the centre of the hinge cup.
Then measure from the bottom edge to the centre of the lower hinge cup.
Example:
- Top hinge centre = 100mm
- Bottom hinge centre = 100mm
For doors with three or more hinges, record all hinge positions.
Common Kitchen Door Sizes
Although we manufacture fully bespoke shaker doors, some common kitchen door sizes include:
- 297mm x 715mm
- 397mm x 715mm
- 497mm x 715mm
- 597mm x 715mm
- 597mm x 140mm (drawer front)
- 597mm x 283mm (drawer front)
Remember that many kitchens contain non-standard sizes, so always measure rather than assume.
Measuring for Painted Shaker Doors
The measuring process is exactly the same for painted shaker doors.
Whether you choose:
- Unfinished MDF shaker doors
- Primed shaker doors
- Professionally painted shaker doors
The dimensions required remain unchanged.
Common Measuring Mistakes to Avoid
Measuring Cabinet Openings Instead of Doors
Whenever possible, measure the actual door rather than the cabinet.
Assuming All Doors Are Identical
Check every door individually. Manufacturing tolerances and previous replacements can lead to slight differences.
Using Centimetres
Always measure in millimetres for maximum accuracy.
Forgetting Drawer Fronts
Many customers focus on doors and forget to measure drawer fronts until later.
Can I Order Just One Replacement Door?
Absolutely.
